United Nations- Misplaced Priorities?

I have participated in numerous UN conferences, commissions and meetings, and after a while, you start thinking that the entire world is obsessed with sexual and reproductive health (abortion, contraception, sterilization). However, if you speak with a delegate from a poor African country where people are starving, or a young girl from India who was forced into marriage at the age of ten, you quickly realize that many UN agencies live in a bubble where they preach human rights from their ivory towers, with zero connection to the real world.

I’m here this week at the UN Commission on Population and Development and I’m holding my breath that by the end of the week’s negotiations, that some starving child in the world will now receive a plate of food, and not a pop-up abortion clinic, as some groups here would have.
